Mary E. Corlew, 101, of Edwardsville, Ill., born Aug. 11, 1914, in Edwardsville died May 14, 2016, at Rosewood Care Center in Edwardsville, Ill.

Mrs. Corlew was a 1936 graduate of Northwestern University, Evanston Ill., where she was a member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority. She majored in English literature but was well grounded in Latin. She was a teacher at Collinsville High School for 13 years where she taught both Latin and comparative literature. Prior to that, she wrote a weekly column entitled “Main Street” for the Edwardsville Intelligencer. She was a member of Edwardsville’s first YMCA Board, being the first secretary, was a member and former president of the Edwardsville Junior Service Club and a member of the Edwardsville Branch of the American Association of University Women. Her other membership included Sunset Hills Country Club, where she played golf and bridge into her mid 70’s. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, First Presbyterian Church, and a past organization chair of the Edwardsville Girl Scouts.

Mary enjoyed travel, and had visited many of the countries of Europe including but not limited to the Soviet Union, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Austria, and those countries considered at the time to be part of Western Europe. She especially enjoyed her trips to Scotland. Her personal library was extensive and she had a grasp of European history, prose, languages, and poetry that was surpassed by few.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Morgan B. Corlew, whom she married on Oct. 10, 1936 at First Presbyterian Church in Edwardsville, Ill., and who died May 11, 1995; her parents, Jessie Johnson and George Allen Handlon; and two brothers, George Walker Handlon and Colin C. Handlon.

Surviving are her son, Philip and wife Louise of Edwardsville; daughter, Mary Georgia Simpson and husband Alvin C. Simpson of Granite City, Ill.; four grandchildren, Michelle Corlew of Naperville, Ill., Elise Reis of Florissant Colo., Sherry and Philip Simpson of Granite City; and a great-grandson, William Curtis Beasley of Granite City.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the First Presbyterian Church Organ Fund. Condolences may be expressed online at weberfuneralhome.com.

Visitation: Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, 2016, at Weber & Rodney Funeral Home, Edwardsville, Ill.

Funeral: Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, 2016, at the funeral home with Rev. Dr. John Hembruch officiating. A private interment will be held Thursday at Woodlawn Cemetery in Edwardsville, Ill.

Classmate Dav Pauli tied the knot Sunday, March 13th 2016, with the new love of his life – the former Annie Skarin. They will henceforth be known as Mr and Mrs Pauli!

We received word this evening of the passing of another classmate. Mary Randant Reinacher passed away yesterday, February 14th 2016 at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, IL.
Our sympathy and condolences go out to all of Mary’s family and friends.

Mary E. Reinacher, 68, of Troy died Monday, February 15, 2016. Visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 8 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Funeral 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial in Highland City Cemetery. Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home, Highland.

James R. Allen, age 68, of Four Seasons, Missouri, passed away Friday, February 12, 2016 at University Hospital in Columbia, Missouri.

James was born August 28, 1947 in Terre Haute, Indiana, the son of Ivan L. and Dorothy J. (Tabor) Allen.
 
James was united in marriage July 29, 1966 in Caseyville, Illinois, to Joyce Wickiser. They shared 49 1/2 years together at the time of his death.
James earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland and Eastern Kentucky University. He went on to earn his Master’s Degree from Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri.
 
James served his country proudly in the United States Army during the Cold War years of 1972 through 1992 when he was honorably discharged. After serving in the military for 20 years, James worked as a computer security specialist. He was a former Board Member and member of Abou Ben Adhem Shrine Temple in Springfield, Missouri and was the current Rajah of Lake Ozark Shrine Club, where he was a member. James was also a member of the Hickory Hill Masonic Lodge #211 in Eldon, Missouri and a member of Lake of the Ozarks Corvette Club.
 
James is survived by his wife, Joyce, of the home; his son Jeffrey Allen of Homestead, Florida; his daughter Kimberly Montgomery and husband, Patrick Boyer, of Granite City, Illinois; his brother Joseph Allen of Georgetown, Texas; seven grandchildren, Heather Montgomery, Bradley Allen, Michael Boyer, Kristopher Allen II, Natasha Boyer, Mikayla Allen and Aireyan Allen; along with several other relatives and friends.
 
He was preceded in death by his parents Ivan and Dorothy Allen and one son, Kristopher J. Allen.
 
Visitation will be from 11:00am until 1:00pm, with the funeral service conducted at 1:00pm

Tom Schardan

We have received word that classmate Thomas D. Schardan passed away on January 28th, 2016. Our sincere condolences and sympathy are extended to Tom’s family and friends.  A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 2nd,  at Bluff View Baptist Church, Collinsville.

In 1965, Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville opened its doors for the very first time, and the first five students to register were some of our classmates.
